Farmed Animals - Capacity Building
Capacity Building
The Federation understands that one of its most important roles as a federated body of animal protectors in India is to help direct committed activists towards the most informed and effective campaigning against India’s meat and fibre industry possible. To this end, the Federation acts as a platform from which activists gain strength, develop strategies, learn from each other’s successes and failures, and create the solidarity needed to counter the enormous and expanding animal-exploiting industry.
To make aware, to unite and to mobilize members of animal welfare/rights organizations, individual animal lovers, and environmentalists throughout India to stop the farming of animals for food and fibre, a series of workshops have been planned in various Indian cities, to protect animals’ lives, the environment and human health. “Animals Used in Food and Fibre” workshops have been held in both Bombay in March of 2009, and in Bangalore in August of 2009. The next workshop is scheduled for Delhi in early 2010. (Click on the links below for more workshop information and photos).
The workshops included presentations and focused discussions detailing the:
• status of animals used for food and fiber in India
• regional consumer trends
• pain and suffering inherent in the farming of animals for food and fiber
• adverse effects of animal farming on the environment
• threats to human health from eating animal products (meat, milk, eggs)
• campaigns currently underway to protect farmed animals
• effective and achievable follow-up actions we can take as a federated coalition to address the
above.
Follow-up discussion sessions developed goals, defined strategies and made concrete assignments so that all participants could stay meaningfully engaged, and work together.
