Dr Sangeeta Sharma Dombivli

The Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) hosted the first of its kind conference of snake rescuers at its office in Dombivli recently. More than 20 snake rescuers from Dombivli, Kalyan, Kalwa and Thane attended this unique conference that aimed at bringing all rescuers of the suburbs together to lay down a future roadmap.

In his opening speech, Nilesh Bhanage, founder, PAWS, explained the importance of the maintenance of snake rescuing data. He also gave a brief presentation on snakes, reptiles and other wildlife rescued by PAWS volunteers during the year 2009.  Sachin Joshi, founder, Nature Save Society, Dombivli, and the chief guest on the occasion, shared his expertise on the importance of team work during the wildlife rescues.

A small video clip was screened after his address wherein PAWS snake rescue team leader Manish Pimple was interviewed. The programme ended with an MTV video clipping wherein PAWS team was featured. “It has been resolved in the conference that all rescuers will create a strong network and will help efficiently by passing on the rescue calls to the nearest rescuer,” informed Nilesh Bhanage.

In the year 2009, a total of 408 snakes were rescued by PAWS which included three venomous, two semi-venomous and eight non-venomous species.

This also included some rare snake species in Dombivli region like trinket snake and sand snake. Of the 408 snakes that PAWS rescued during year 2009, 200 were rescued by Subhash Pandiyan, a PAWS volunteer. He was felicitated for his services.

PAWS also rescued 38 different birds including raptors and wildlife like scorpions, turtles, macaque, squirrels and chameleons.
